Before you commitCommission terms
The terms every commission is made under. The price, the size and the dates are agreed separately, for each piece.
These are the standing terms for a commission. They do not set a price or a size - those are agreed for each commission individually, in writing, before any work starts.
What is being commissioned
An original artwork, made individually for the client by SEAN AMUNDSON.
Each commission is scoped and quoted on its own. The size, the medium, the price, the deposit, the balance and the estimated completion are agreed between the client and the artist in writing before work begins, and those agreed details sit alongside the terms on this page.
Creative direction
The client brings the idea. That can include the concept, preferred colours, imagery that means something to them, reference material, the feeling the piece should carry, elements it must have, and elements it must avoid. All of that is wanted, and the more of it the better.
The painting itself is made in SEAN AMUNDSON's own style and interpretation. That is the part being commissioned: his eye, his hand, and the visual language the rest of the work on this site is made in.
So the direction is set together and the execution is his. The client does not direct individual brushstrokes, the composition, or how the colours are set against each other - those are the decisions that make it one of his paintings rather than a copy of something already in mind.
Concept approval and changes
The concept and the overall direction are agreed before painting begins.
One progress image may be shared at the midpoint, at the artist’s discretion.
Minor adjustments may be considered as the piece nears completion.
Major changes to a concept, composition, palette or subject that has already been approved may require an additional fee and a revised completion date.
Payment
A deposit of 50% of the commission price reserves the commission and allows work to begin.
The remaining balance is due on completion, and before the artwork leaves the artist’s possession.
Cancellation
If the client cancels after work has begun, the deposit is retained by the artist, against the work already done.
What the price does not include
Framing, packing, shipping, delivery, installation and any special materials are not included in the commission price unless they are specifically listed and agreed in writing.
Copyright and portfolio use
Buying the commissioned artwork buys the physical painting. It does not buy the copyright.
SEAN AMUNDSON keeps copyright and reproduction rights in the work unless something else is agreed in writing.
He may photograph the finished piece and show it on his website, on social media, in his portfolio, in exhibitions, in press material, and in other promotion of his work.
The client is welcome to share photographs of the piece for personal, non-commercial use, with the artist credited.

Questions, or ready to start
Anything here that is unclear is worth asking about before signing rather than after.
